Our Access Statement
Due to the construction work at Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre, Britannia will be gaining a new Visitor Centre and Gift Shop which will involve us operating out of temporary accommodation whilst these new facilities are being created. Please note that during this time there may be loud noises.
The Royal Yacht Britannia is a five-star tourist attraction and exclusive use evening events venue, berthed in Leith, Edinburgh.
Britannia’s five decks are highly accessible via a central lift.
The entrance to Britannia is on the 2nd Floor of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. Ocean Terminal has a multi-storey car park which has 700 free parking places, including dedicated disabled parking spaces on Levels C and E, and parent and child parking on Levels A, C and E. There are lifts within the car park, however the Ground Floor of Ocean Terminal is not accessible by lift.
Complimentary carer tickets are available at the Ticket Desk for those acting in a carer capacity.
If you require any further information about specific access or need advice on planning your visit, please contact us: +44 (0) 131 555 5566 (Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm) or email enquiries@tryb.co.uk.
If we have not covered your access requirements below or in our document, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss your needs and offer assistance where we can.

Assistance Dogs
We welcome guide dogs, hearing dogs and other recognised assistance dogs.
Wheelchair Users
Britannia is classed as Category 1, the highest level for wheelchair access without assistance, by VisitScotland. The tour is highly accessible for wheelchair users with lifts and ramps throughout. In order to enjoy the whole tour, wheelchairs should be no wider than 670mm.*
Our entrance is on the 2nd Floor of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. There is free parking in Ocean Terminal's Car Park. It is best to park on E. This is the same level as the Britannia Visitor Centre, however if this level is full, there are lifts to access Level E from the other Car Park levels.
*Please note: the Britannia tour is not suitable for Shopmobility electric wheelchairs. The length of a mobility scooter must also be taken into consideration due to the nature of the ship and the tight corridors. At the ticket desk they can confirm whether it will be possible to visit in your mobility scooter, with five wheelchairs available as alternatives. The Royal Deck Tearoom is only accessible to wheelchairs no wider than 670mm, as it can only be accessed via the original on board lift.
Read Simply Emma's blog post to learn about her great accessible visit to Britannia. Please note that Emma visited before our new Visitor Centre opened in May 2025. However, the descriptions of the tour aboard the ship remain the same.
People With Reduced Mobility
Each of Britannia's decks is accessed via a shore-side lift tower and stairwell. All seats without ropes are there for you to use and enjoy your audio tour. Wheelchairs can be hired free of charge at our ticket desk, just ask a member of staff on arrival.
Access For Buggies
Buggies are welcomed on board Britannia. All but the widest double buggies will have full access to the Britannia tour (max width 670mm). We have baby changing facilities in the Visitor Centre and on board. There are also dedicated parent and child parking bays on level E of the Car Park.
People Who Are Visually Impaired
We have an audio handset tour in English for those who are visually impaired. It has additional explanations on the layout of the Royal Yacht. This audio tour can be requested at the Handset Desk before you step on board Britannia.
We also have the tour script available in English Braille. Guide dogs are welcomed on board.
People Who Are Hearing Impaired
We have tablets available with the Britannia tour in British and American Sign Language. We also have a printed version of our English language tour - please request this at the Handset Desk before you step on board Britannia. Our audio handsets have adjustable volume control, so you may wish to also take the handset tour. We also welcome hearing dogs.
People With Learning Disabilities
We have an audio handset tour in ‘Basic English’ for visitors with learning disabilities. Visitors whose first language is not English may also find this tour useful.
People With Dementia
Britannia’s staff are dementia-friendly trained and we offer regular seating along the tour route.
